THE NEW REALITY
Often when prospective clients speak to us about legal representation, the new reality is that, while they say they need a "lawyer", what they really want is a legal business advisor who comprehensively understands their needs. Clients do not have money to waste on a purely academic approach to the practice of law. Today's top lawyers come to an engagement with the necessary practical skills to get the job done efficiently while protecting their client's legal interests.
The approach that Foothill Entertainment Legal takes is simple: we are here to facilitate our clients' business objectives - not present an obstruction. Lead by widely respected attorney Gregory Payne, we focus on cost effective, high quality transactional representation in the entertainment industries and also provide counseling and legal services regarding corporate, trademark and copyright law, intellectual property and personal business matters.
Payne currently represents a diverse group of international clients including animation studios, entertainment executives, internet and videogame content providers as well as talent management agencies. Being one of the few attorneys who specialize in the global animation and family entertainment industry, he is uniquely qualified to represent clients on projects from both the legal and production/distribution points of view. Payne was recently tapped as U.S. counsel for a European special effects/videogame producer to assist in closing a multi-million dollar production agreement for a major motion picture. Because the client's previous U.S. legal team was not experienced in the practical aspects of the work to be done, the client felt the project was being "over-lawyered". With his knowledge of production pipeline issues and "real world" industry experience, Payne was able to quickly and expertly close the transaction.
Frequently sought after as a conference speaker, Gregory Payne is a graduate of Dartmouth College and Stanford Law School where he was Note Editor for the Stanford Law Review. He spent ten years practicing large firm corporate law on Wall Street and in Washington, D.C., primarily in the mergers and acquisitions field and general business law. Since then, and for more than twenty years, his practice has focused on Entertainment Law after joining then-small animation producer DIC Entertainment. As Executive Vice President of Legal and Business Affairs, Payne oversaw all legal, administration, music and operations for DIC. During his tenure, DIC grew to be one of the largest independent production companies in the U.S.
At Foothill Entertainment Legal, professionalism and personal attention are our top priorities, all grounded on a thorough understanding of the entertainment industry and each client's specific business needs.
